Consumerism

There are a million anti consumption quotes out there, but this one was enough to strike a nerve.

“The average American already consumes so much that the U.S. has a worldwide environmental impact amounting to 4 billion people. The U.S., with only 5 percent of the world’s population, consumes 32 percent of the world’s petroleum and plastics and produces 25 percent of the world’s greenhouse gases. Its 265 million people produce more waste than the 2 billion people in China and India. Indeed, the cause of environmental destruction is conspicuous consumption – a lifestyle that is unfortunately “migrating” from the U.S. to the Third World.”
-”The Nation” (independent), Bangkok, April 16, 1998
quoted in World Press Review, September ‘98

Here is my response.

Production without consumption
Is it so evil, that to make a nation great, it’s people need to consume? I will go without naming those individuals who fear the consumers. But Why are the consumers feared? Are they feared for the act of consuming alone? Or are they feared because consumers define and pave the way for one’s nation?

Common sense
Put down the hammer and sickle for just one minute. We all come together as one to work for our country. A job needs to be done so we do it. You provide us with work, so we work. But when we work, we get hungry. We hunger to consume. What is our reward for our work if we cannot reward ourselves? Is it more important to form innovation for the whole or the individual? Who makes up the whole if it is not the individual?

During the day, we are one. We act as one to get the job done. But at night, we go home to rest. At night, our time is ours. This is the time “we” turns into “I” This is when I seek some form of greedy consumption, and there is nothing wrong with that.

It is even hard to say that America “Over consumes” If America consumes plastic, when we are done with it, the plastic goes right into the recycling bin, Then that plastic is taken away and made into some thing else. If America consumes too much petroleum/ oil, it is only to gas up our cars to get us to that job we must do to keep our economy going. Greenhouse gasses? You mean like the greenhouse gases which are produced largely by our oceans our volcanoes and every living thing on this earth? Should we strip the earth of all so that you may comfortable say there are no more greenhouse gasses?

To be a consumer is just a small fraction in the cycle of life. Without the desire to consume even a cheeseburger, we would not be able to even produce the energy it takes to get out of the house in the morning…and pick up that hammer and sickle.

You want innovation, and I want a reward for bringing you that innovation. Call me greedy, but my life is too precious and too short to slave for no reward.
